Mindful Yoga for Trauma Training for Yoga Teachers • 15-Hour Program
Limited Capacity seats available

For many of us, the practices of yoga have changed our lives. That statement may seem dramatic, but it’s true. These practices teach us to turn inward, to pay attention, and to notice without judgment. They enable us to find balance in our bodies and minds, as well as develop our overall well-being. Because of those benefits, yoga is an invaluable asset for veterans who are coping with trauma-related psychological difficulties.Yoga practices are a powerful complement to professional treatment for Post Traumatic Stress. A mindful, embodied yoga practice can provide relief from symptoms and develop the supportive skills that veterans need in their everyday lives. Yoga does not cure Post Traumatic Stress, but it has proven to aid in a veteran’s healing journey.Mindful Yoga Therapy is an Embodyoga® based, empirically informed, clinically tested program comprised of five practices: Pranayama (breathing), Asana (postures connected with breath), Yoga Nidra, Meditation, and Gratitude. Each practice is a tool veterans can use to cope with Post Traumatic Stress, and together, they form a comprehensive system—a toolbox—that will carry veterans into a life of strength and resilience. The healing effects of these ancient yogic practices have begun to receive recognition from modern scientists. Research has discovered and validated what the yogis have known for centuries: yoga is one of the most effective ways to encourage and stimulate the healing process.Clinical trials have demonstrated that even the best yoga teachers need to acquire a specific set of skills and considerations to work in trauma recovery programs. This 15-hour training program is for 200-hour certified yoga teachers and service providers.  Mindful Yoga Center also offers 200-hour teacher training.Fifteen (15) hours of Yoga Alliance continuing education credits are available.

Yoga Therapy Approaches with Ravi Singh
This is an add-on experience for those who want to come early and dive in! To register for this experience please visit: https://sedonayogafestival.com/syf2019-pre-post-conference-immersions/

If a client came to you with depression, anxiety, adrenal fatigue, migraines, diabetes, high blood pressure, hypothyroid…do you have the yogic tools to give them something that works beyond the generic approaches most yoga teachers draw upon? Of course we’re not doctors and as yoga teachers we can’t claim to diagnose or heal, but as an adjunct to medical treatment we want to be in a position to make a difference for people. In this workshop you’ll learn specific techniques for a wide range of ailments to improve the quality of your students’ lives and dramatically add to your professional palette.

Kundalini Yoga prompts the energy of energies to allow us to foster a relationship with energy itself. Let’s train ourselves to be conduits for the Universe to work through and raise our trajectory for optimal outcomes! We’ll do a profound practice together and gain powerful insights into the essence of the healing path.

Celebrated Teacher Ravi Singh has 45 yrs. teaching experience and (w/Ana Brett) is Author of 25 bestselling DVD’s and an incredible new book: Kundalini Yoga: Life in the Vast Lane. Ravi’s approach is powerful, poetic, motivational, majestic, and fun! Psoas release for heart opening
Limited Capacity seats available

Our bodies are a dumping ground for tension and stress. When we experience stress, tension, anxiety, or trauma, the body immediately goes into the ‘fight or flight’ response. The Psoas muscle (hip flexor) is directly linked to this primal instinct to protect. Under stress the Psoas contracts, becoming tight and short. Add to it the common movements of everyday life and various forms of exercise (cycling, running, hiking), the hip flexors are commonly the tightest muscle group in the body. This class systematically opens the group of hip flexor muscles, as well as muscles of the side body, allowing for greater ease in back bending, and energetic heart opening. Create freedom in the spine and calm in the mind. Release the hips and open your heart!

Shakti Naam, Aromatherapy, + Live Music with TCG
Shakti Naam is a new form of yoga in the West, which has evolved to help with todays stresses and fast-paced, yet sedentary lifestyles. The teachings and techniques are not new, but rather taken from far back traditions of Sukshma Vyayama known as the yoga of immortality. It is a powerful yogic science that allows the body to heal itself, and therefore express its fullest potential. The practice of Shakti Naam looks and feels different than other forms of yoga , as it combines breath work, mudras, sound, asanas, mantra and mediation. It provides an almost immediate experience of new energies. New students usually feel this shift within the first five minutes of class. As we age, the life force within begins to deteriorate leaving us vulnerable to psychological and physical ailments. Shakti Naam causes the life force to flow through the body-removing blockages, cleaning and clearing. It promotes rejuvenation and clarity of mind and body. You become a radiant, magnetic being as it allows you to merge with and become the life force in action......want to try it? Raise your voltage and tune into your Shakti vibration with this transformational experience. Naam is the frequency that connects us as One. Get ready to chant, breathe, dance, and shift into your highest potential. With the guidance of the plants and the trees, this experience will send you to a mystical and majestic portal of the heart. Open and expand your entire Being with Shakti Naam Yoga set to the live rhythms of "The Conscious Groove", and anointed with the very powerful Wisdom of the Earth medicine. All Levels Are Welcome!

Teaching to Older Adults
Limited Capacity seats available

Exercise is a crucial part of healthy aging, and as a large percentage of our population are now in their 60’s, 70’s,and 80’s, it is imperative that they are offered low-impact exercise options to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A consistent yoga practice can reduce the risk of falls, increase flexibility and range of motion in the joints, increase strength and reduce stress as we age. As yoga teachers we need to be aware of the risks and contraindications for this demographic. In this 2 hour workshop we will look at some of the issues of aging and how a yoga practice can be adapted to accommodate this population, while still creating fun and functional classes.

Deepening Your Spiritual Practice Off the Mat - Vedic Sadhana for Self Enquiry
Limited Capacity seats available

Are you ready to deepen your spiritual practice off the yoga mat? While Sage Patanjali is renowned for the 8-step path of Yoga, there exist even older disciplines of mind purification from India that beautifully facilitate Yogic Sadhana. This class will introduce the Non-dualism (Advaita) based 9 Step spiritual discipline known as Sadhana Chatushtayam, that originated in ancient Vedic Upanishadic lineages, and was later systematized by Adi Shankarachaya in the 8th century. This cognitive thought-based practice remains relatively unknown in the west. For Yogis and Yoginis who struggle to maintain their inner equipoise or samatvam in daily life, these rich teachings provide a different pathway to purify the thoughts, make better life choices, and calm the ego. These practices support us to stay centered and focused on our spiritual goals, while participating fully and gracefully in the world. Ultimately this sadhana prepares us to receive Self knowledge as adhikari – qualified students of Jnana Yoga. Teacher Aparna Amy Lewis, a longtime student of Vedic scholar and lineage holder Acharya Shunya, and member of Veda Sarayu Sampradaya, will be sharing her lineage’s hidden treasure, the Sadhana Chatushtayam, as well as “spiritual case studies”, and her own journey of Self Enquiry as a student of a Vedic Gurukulam. For students who want to go deeper, copies of Aparna’s book Starting Your Spiritual Path (Jan. 2019) will be available.

yoga recovery: a mind, body, spirit journey to wellness
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

We all know someone who has been directly, or indirectly, impacted by addictions or alcoholism. As people, we have an innate need to bond and connect with one another. When we cannot do that, when we cannot connect to each other because of our circumstance, we’ve been traumatized, beaten down by life, mental unwellness, marginalization, whatever the cause may be, when we cannot connect with each other we will connect with something, anything, that gives us some sense of relief. And today, that isn’t limited to drugs and alcohol. We turn to shopping, gambling, sex, pornography, gaming, eating disorders, social media, whatever it is, to give us some sort of connection. And to complicate things, people 18 to 25 are reporting that they are incredibly lonely, despite their facebook friends and twitter followers. So where does Yoga Recovery come in? Yoga Recovery explores the heart and science of yoga, meditation and physical activity in recovery (yes, there are volumes of studies that validate yoga and meditation in recovery!) In this “workshop” flow we will see how our asana practice connects us to our physical self. This is the foundation to allow us to go deeper through meditation, to connect with our inner self, our true self, the Divine within. Our ability to really tap into our true self is essential if we are to connect, bond and love one another. . Together we will flow, we will meditate and we will connect with one another in a deeply powerful way. Participants will leave our practice feeling rooted, connected to oneself and to others, and deeply aware of the power of love within. This is a sampling of the 100 hour Yoga Recovery course that has been approved by Yoga Alliance for Continuing Education credits.

Join Stacy & Dave Dockins for a short discussion and 90 minute flow style practice in which they will guide you through the Embodied Posture Methodology approach to postural alignment. If you are looking to design a practice that fits your body and supports life-long functional wellness, this class is for you. Embodied Posture Methodology, or EPM, empowers you to align yoga postures to best suit your uniqueness. Through over 25 years of studying the human body and teaching yoga, Stacy Dockins developed this innovative approach that integrates bio-individuality and long-term, sustainable functional wellness. Combining body awareness, science, and exploration, Stacy provides practical information you can immediately apply on your mat to get the most out of your practice. They will share their methodology of presenting postures as a collection of movement actions, enabling you to skillfully deconstruct and reconstruct them for your maximum benefit. Their exploratory cues will guide you to experience various sensations available in the posture so that you can use your mat as a vehicle for returning back home into your body. Whether you are a student or a teacher, EPM will show you how to critically approach postural alignment. Yoga poses will be more accessible and effective than ever before. Most importantly, you will cultivate the tool of Embodiment, the ability to tune in to what is arising from within your own body.

Kriya Yoga: Purifying One’s Consciousness from Unconscious to Super-conscious
Limited Capacity seats available

Most human beings are governed by their unconscious, which is developed through the programming of one’s life experiences. Living in the unconscious inhibits us from experiencing insight and bliss in each moment of our living. In this class, we will explore ancient kriya techniques and learn how to integrate them into the asana and pranayama practice, leading us out of the unconscious and into a state of super-conscious, which is unbound and unlimited. Yogiraj Alan Finger will then offer tools for samyama: how to bring that inspired state into each moment of your living.

Gentle/Restorative Yoga with Yoga Nidra
In this spiritually oriented yoga practice we find our center. Through gentle mindful breath and movement, followed by restorative yoga, we allow the body-mind to relax and release. Class closes with a 25 minute Yoga Nidra (guided supine meditation experience); a potent and ancient practice for directing our senses inward. Our essence is peace and ease…and through the passive opening of the body, and focused attention, we can experience this truth. Open to any level of student, this practice attends to the balancing of the Central Nervous System, aiming at homeostasis, where healing can happen. Our lives are often full of stimulation, chaotic noise, and long to-do lists, leading to whirlwinds of thoughts and concerns. In this mindfulness based practice we begin to re-train the brain to slow down, regain focus on the task at hand, and return to Presence. The gift of Being in the Now offers a release from anxiety, worry and stress…and this is where true Yoga exists.

Mantras, Mudras, Malas
Limited Capacity seats available

A saying from the Vedas claims that "Speech is the essence of humanity." All of what humanity thinks and ultimately becomes is determined by the expression of ideas and actions through speech and writing. Ideas remain un-actualized until they are created through the power of speech. MANTRA are words or phrases repeated over and over again to bring about the vibration and/or resonance of action. Bascially, our thoughts become words, our words create vibration, that vibration creates our life. The simple, beautiful hand expressions called MUDRAS, play a vital but subtle role in the yoga tradition. There are hundreds of mudras, each meant to express or bring forth a quality state of mind such as fearlessness, strength or grounded-ness. They are believed to have a therapeutic effect, helping to restore and heal imbalances, eliminating excess tension, strengthening weak immunity and addressing aches and pains. What is a MALA? Malas are beautiful, they are the “yoga-bling” that yogis gravitate toward to “be a yogi”. The term mala is derived from the Sanskrit word “Japamala,” which is a string of beads used for prayer and meditation by Hindus and Buddhists (similar to the concept of a Rosary in the Catholic faith). The string is made up of 108 individual beads, which are used to keep count while chanting or repeating a mantra while meditating. The number 108 has spiritual significance and is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. The number 1 stands for God, the Universe, the Divine, or your Ultimate Truth; 0 stands for emptiness and humility in your spiritual practice; and 8 stands for infinity and timelessness. 1+8 = 9 which is an extremely auspicious number in numerology. The beginning and the end… rebirth. In this workshop we will explore simple MUDRAS for healing, MANTRA for prayer and connection, and MALAS and how they can support your practice. All levels of yogis welcome, enrollment includes a set of mala beads. Workshop includes a 90 minute Vinyasa practice, pranayama, meditation, mantra and lecture. Includes 60-120 minutes asana practice, followed by lecture.

From Interoception to Performance and Back Again: The Trauma-Sensitive Turn
Limited Capacity seats available

Only a hundred years ago, traditional yoga instruction was transmitted orally, usually to one student at a time. The focus was on the psycho-spiritual realm, accessed through interoception: our natural talent for registering internal sensations. The instructor's role was to guide the student towards an awareness of feelings and perceptions, and how they can be channeled or shifted by posture and breathing. The early 20th century saw a colonial and technological shift to visual media as a primary pedagogical tool, and this changed everything. Demonstration and performance quickly began to dominate the teaching of physical yoga -- and the bodies doing it. Photography became a means of isolating, cataloguing and commodifying postures for mass consumption. Every citizen of Instagram knows all about how this can feel, whether good or bad. Or -- how it doesn't feel like anything, because visual epistemology overrides interoception. However: old ways are coming back through new (but also old) ideas. "How do these postures feel?" -- is once again becoming the dominant question, along with: "Is this functional, or is it aesthetic?" and: "Can I do yoga as though no one is watching?" The trauma-sensitive movement caps it all off by asking us all to consider yoga as a means for healing and restoring internal agency. Things these days seem to be looking up -- or in.

Come As You Are: A Workshop to Empower You to Connect to Your Authentic Self
Limited Capacity seats available

The Tantric practice sees all aspects of life as a form of consciousness. Inherent in each being is a divine spark that is perfection at its essence. As we grow and develop, we lose that sense of connection to our most authentic self and believe that we have to become someone or something different than who we are internally. In this workshop, Sarah will create a safe space for you to start to look at that narrative of “not good enough” and apply a new paradigm using Tantric tools and techniques. Learn to welcome the present moment as it is, experiencing images, sensations, thoughts, and emotions not as barriers to pure consciousness, but as pathways to enhancing it. Accompanied by the soothing and harmonizing vibrations recorded by Aya and Tyler, this elevating practice will leave you intrinsically tuned in to your true self.

Anahata Chakra Yoga: The Union of Shiva & Shakti
Limited Capacity seats available

Take a journey in this kundalini yoga class using yantra (symbolism), mantra (sound) and asana (posture) to explore the world through the lens of the Heart center. In classical kundalini, the chakras represents an initiation or doorway into a state of consciousness that progresses from root to the crown. The combination of asana, mantra and yantra in a practice amplifies and accelerates the activation of Shakti in the Anahata illuminating what we have stored and offering a way to transform old patterns. As the 4th chakra, it is the bridge between the material and the spiritual worlds. Our evolution as individuals and collectively depends upon us understanding the partnership between two realms where balance, harmony and longevity exist naturally. It is the most useful and constructive solution to the polarity and divisiveness that permeates all of our relations currently.

Does Yoga Support Social Justice Work? No and Yes.
Limited Capacity seats available

The Bhagavad Gita was the favourite book of both Gandhi and his assassin. European fascist movements of the 1930s were fascinated with yoga. And even today, practicing yoga is not a reliable predictor of one's political persuasion. The Yoga Sutras will not teach you about reproductive rights, rape culture or white privilege. The Hatha Yoga texts are in no way feminist. Therefore, is it a mistake to believe that practicing yoga makes you a better citizen, or ally? In this discussion we'll explore how social justice work really begins with education that comes from beyond the yoga mat. And, how those who are working within the social justice movement really can trust yoga practice to help build resilience.

Mystic Medicine Circle
The Universal Laws of Nature do not derive from any religion, but instead contain a road map through sacred geometry that reveals our Divine interconnectedness. One of the oldest systems of mystical thought, these teachings are deeply rooted in Ancient Egyptian esoteric wisdom and are based on receiving Truths that help to elevate consciousness in order to become less reactive and more heart centered in unconditional love. It is not enough to do physical yoga because yoga alone cannot open the heart. Learning esoteric wisdom can help assist in the evolution of future life times, strengthens the aura, aligns the being with the Laws of Nature, and help to change mental thought patterns in order to create new habits and move from fate consciousness into one's destiny. Negative seeds are sown in the mental or Divine Realm, pass through the emotional or Astral World, and manifest ease or dis-ease in the action or Physical Plane of existence. A balance of a physical practice and deep understanding of the Laws of Nature help to liberate the soul from the body of pain and move gracefully into the body of Light. In this 2-hour workshop, we will learn about the Law of the Triangle and the 7 Creative Planets. Learn the Primary Planet that reveals the elements and energies we chose to be born with in order to understand who we are and what we chose to express in this lifetime. Connect with the plants and trees that support your Primary Planet as well as the 7 days of the week. Get anointed by 7 plant and tree teachers, enjoy a powerful vibrational healing bath, and chant Naam meditation to seal the forces of wisdom and healing into the entire being.

The Trauma-Conscious Yoga Method℠: Inner Child Practice
Limited Capacity seats available

Nityda has a unique way of creating a sacred space that feels safe for doing deep healing work within the asana practice. The Trauma-Conscious Yoga Method℠ integrates yin yoga and gentle vinyasa flow with somatic psychotherapy techniques, always from a heart-centered & trauma-aware space. In this practice Nityda will create such a safe, sacred space to empower you to approach your chid within from a gentle and compassionate embodiment. This practice is critical in fostering self-compassion and moving through and past samskaras (faulty self-reflective beliefs and patterns that keep us stuck). This practice is intended to enable you to discharge from the body, mind and spirit, traumas that have remained trapped within. This practice will inspire new insights and evoke shifts in consciousness that support your healing and personal evolution, and connection to your highest Self. The asana portion of this practice is appropriate for all levels, including absolute beginners. We will integrate gentle vinyasa flow with longer yin-style holds and restorative postures with the use of supportive props. Nityda will guide you through internal dialogues and contemplative practices within the asana that are inspired by her training in Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems and EMDR therapy. This practice includes pranayama and meditation. Nityda is conscious of the common triggers for trauma survivors and so she always provides disclaimers and offers variations and differing options for those who may be triggered by breathwork and/or closing their eyes. Emotions are messages. Meditate to listen
Limited Capacity seats available

Our physical body is tangible to the touch. Our emotions are messages from our body, mind, and spirit. Meditation is the bridge between all aspects of ourself. By quieting the physical body, we give our mind and spirit an opportunity to listen to the internal dialogue between all aspects of ourselves. In this class, Leah will offer two meditations. The first on the basic act of listening to and connecting to our senses and body. The second meditation offers an experience that, by placing attention in a particular area of the body it can reduce emotions such as anxiety and increase emotions like confidence. We begin from the outside and work our way in. We start with the tangible confidence in our physical body as we explore the more subtle aspects of our feelings. So that we are present and aware in our body, mind, spirit ; to awaken in life with expanded awareness. For without awareness we are blindly moving though life. For example, lets say you are confronted with trauma or pain and you do not have a reference point to your mind and emotions to guide you through this challenging time. Meditation will give you that reference point. It is a viable life tool that you can add to your life tool kit, and best thing is! that you can use it any way that you choose. To further enhance your life during the best times and the times of struggle. Come to this class to experience your true nature. That of joy, peace and love.

Join us in an invigorating and intensive hip opening session and experience precise and fluid movements that can remove tension on a physical, emotional, and energetic level. You will be guided to approach the opening of the hips in a fun and patient way, allowing the body time to respond. When the hips are open and loose, the rest of your body will feel more supported and at ease. Learn techniques to gently stretch and open the hips. Increase flexibility, explore different rotations of the hips and safe, effective ways to open them, relieving stress on lumbar, sacroiliac, and knee joints, plus you’ll clear, awaken and balance the two base chakras. The hip area is a complex cluster of powerful muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and we can begin to loose the rotation, flexion, and extension they need to remain agile. Life today requires that we sit too much — sports, such as running and cycling (even walking) demand hip strength but not flexibility, and everyday stress creates tension in your hip area. You will be guided to approach the opening of the hips in a patient way, allowing the body time to respond. Moving from the Core
Limited Capacity seats available

We talk about working the “core” yet when we hear that, most of us immediately think of the “six pack abs” when in fact there is much more to the core than a nice looking stomach. The body’s “core” refers to the muscles around the abdomen, pelvis and back, they are also the spines primary stabilizers. The core muscles are almost always active, from sitting to standing, walking to running, the core muscles are at work stabilizing our body. Weak core muscles make one more susceptible to poor posture, back pain and injuries during activity. Core exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work in harmony. This leads to better balance, stability, lean and strong abdominal muscles, and a stronger, more fluid yoga practice.

PRISM: a Model for Addressing Cycles of Harm in Yoga Communities
Limited Capacity seats available

Yoga Service Providers utilize the intellectual, emotional and pedagogical resources of modern yoga methods, lineages, and communities to provide services to vulnerable populations. To uphold the principle of "do no harm", it is prudent to: Pause to reflect on the idea that each yoga method and community carries both value, but also, potentially, a history of abuse. Research the literature on the method to find and understand that history. Investigate whether the harm has been acknowledged and addressed. Show how you will embody the virtues and not bypass the wounds of the community. Model transparent power sharing and engaged ethics for future practitioners. The PRISM strategy is intended to foster transparency and care in spiritual communities. It is meant to prevent retraumatization, obviate the stress of disillusionment, and to help Yoga Service Providers avoid the psychological, institutional, and spiritual drag that accrues when abuse histories are hidden, while reducing the material and emotional labour of backtracking and mending necessitated when hidden histories explode.

Adaptive Yoga Moves Any Body
Limited Capacity seats available

Join Yoga Moves MS and learn how yoga can be adapted for any body. This class will explore the joy of adaptive yoga for those with a range of abilities and neuromuscular conditions. With creativity and an open mind and heart, be amazed with what you can do as a yoga instructor and therapist to help those with MS and neuromuscular conditions. Cultivate healing power with a sense of playfulness and empowerment to feel alive and thrive in the body. From the Yoga Moves toolbox, traditional standing postures will be experienced in a chair and lying down on the mat. Seated poses that are commonly practiced on the mat will be adapted so that individuals receive similar benefits when they are practiced in a chair. A range of postures become accessible with the use of props such as chairs, blocks, blankets, straps, and the wall. Techniques to safely lower down from a chair to the earth and lift off from the earth to a chair will be included in our time together. A generous restorative posture will conclude our session.

GRAVITY & GRACE: Tools to Rewire Your Subtle Body
Limited Capacity seats available

Our mind is a powerful instrument, where we can realize everything is temporary and nothing is impossible. This is felt when we recognize our subtle body possesses many 'minds' - the mind in our head, throughout our spine, in our heart and in our gut, to name a few. With creative use of Gravity as a catalyst for movement, and Grace as a consequence of surrender, this dynamic 3-part practice will support the gentle “rewiring” of your neural circuitry responsible for effortless motion, healing, and infinite possibilities. The result helps build refined levels of attention and focus, which encourages greater sensitivity in different 'seats' of mind, and through consistent practice, builds flexibility, strength, and stillness naturally.
