Living with chronic pain has become a common experience in this country. Allopathic medicine has taken aim at the issue, yet sorely missed the target while incurring staggering societal and economic costs. It is clear from the opioid crisis that our health care system needs to compassionately attend to the complex biopsychosocial roots of chronic pain. A deeper understanding of how our nervous system maladapts to morph acute pain into chronic pain is emerging. Mulitmodal solutions to the growing problem of chronic pain in society constitutes right action. Treatment rather than management of chronic pain is the new frontier. Yoga offers a time honored path for humanity to recognize and relieve suffering, so it is not surprising that attention is turning to how the practice can assist in treatment of chronic pain. Yoga is clearly a science of the mind that fully engages the physical mental, energetic and spiritual aspects of our being as instruments for our healing. Many students (and teachers) initially enter the practice of Yoga seeking relief from some form of chronic pain, as it is an embodied phenomenon. Why does yoga seem to help? We are witnessing an exciting new era of integration of the science and the wisdom traditions. Discover what the scientific community is learning about why suffering human beings through the ages may find what they are seeking when they practice this ancient art.
